The project has already been approved, the molding profile has been selected, the baseboard has been coordinated with the doors, and the cornice with the ceiling. Construction, however, is still ongoing. This is exactly where a practical question arises: should the wooden finish trim be purchased now or should you wait until the geometry of the rooms finally stops changing.

If you order too early, you may end up with extra meters, incorrect endings near built-in furniture, an incorrect calculation for door openings, or a wall layout that no longer matches the actual wall. If you wait until the last moment, the painters and installers may finish the preparatory work and stop because the profile is missing.

Therefore buy building materials wholesale for the finish trim it is wiser not to do it with a single date, but in two stages. First, the product part of the order is approved — article numbers, material, profile, size, finish, and samples. Then, after the control measurement, the final quantity, cutting, reserve, and room-by-room division are fixed.

This is especially important for wooden linear trim. The baseboard depends on the actual perimeter and doors. The cornice depends on the final geometry of the ceiling contour. The molding depends on the wall layout, which changes when doors, radiators, sockets, and built-in furniture are moved.

The main rule of the article: you can choose in advance; the final quantity — only after your specific finishing area has achieved stable geometry.

Go to Catalog

Buy building materials in bulk in advance or wait for final dimensions?

The project has two opposing risks.

Buying too early

The drawing is still changing, but the material is already on site.

Consequences:

  • extra lengths;
  • shortages in new areas;
  • incorrect cutting;
  • premature storage of long-length items;
  • repeat purchase after changes.

Buying too late

All dimensions are ready, but the order is only formed before installation.

Consequences:

  • waiting for a missing item code;
  • delay in finishing works;
  • urgent replacement with a similar profile;
  • abandoning the approved configuration for the sake of the deadline.

Therefore, the decision is not binary.

They approve earlier exactly what will be used.

They confirm later exactly how much is needed.

Which wooden finishing products depend most on the final measurement

Element Dependence on final geometry What most often changes the quantity
Baseboard High doors, built-in furniture, niches
Cornice High ceiling niches, protrusions, beams
Molding high with complex layout doors, radiators, sockets, furniture
Casing Very High ready-made boxes and actual openings
Rail Depends on the project field width and actual pitch
furniture profile depends on the product actual dimensions of the cabinet/facade

This does not mean that such items cannot be selected at the design stage. On the contrary: the article number and profile are better approved in advance. What should be postponed until the control measurement is not the design decision, but the final volume.

Wooden skirting board: the profile is chosen in advance, the linear footage — after the finished perimeter

Before the finishing works are completed, you can already confirm:

  • article number;
  • the material;
  • height;
  • thickness;
  • the character of the profile;
  • the future finish;
  • sample.

And the final calculation is best done when the following are clear:

  • actual doorways;
  • built-in wardrobes;
  • kitchen cabinets;
  • niches;
  • areas without skirting board;
  • actual wall lengths.

For example, PLT-006 currently has two geometric groups: MDF/moisture-resistant MDF — 100×16×2600 mm, beech/oak — 100×15×2400 mm.

This matters for the final calculation: the same 50 meters of clean perimeter in MDF and solid wood convert into a different number of strips.

For technical reference, you can save the card PLT-006 in the project specification.

When door openings can be subtracted from the skirting

A door is subtracted from the calculation only when its boundaries are truly clear.

It is too early to make the final calculation if:

  • the opening will still be expanded;
  • the frame has not been selected;
  • a portal is planned;
  • the door is being replaced with a sliding system;
  • a built-in wardrobe will appear nearby;
  • the skirting board should return to the slope.

Example.

According to the drawing, the wall is 5.8 m and the door is 0.9 m.

At an early stage, a reference point can be noted:

5.8 − 0.9 = 4.9 m.

But if, after installing the frame, the clear section on the left and right is 2.28 + 2.47 m, the actual calculation is:

2.28 + 2.47 = 4.75 m.

The difference is only 0.15 m, but across ten identical rooms it already becomes 1.5 m. And if the profile is supplied in whole lengths, the impact can be even greater due to cutting.

Built-in furniture: the main source of late skirting board changes

A full-wall wardrobe, kitchen base unit, or built-in bookcase changes the perimeter.

Until the furniture is finally approved, you cannot automatically assume that the skirting board runs behind the cabinet.

You need to determine:

  • whether it ends before the furniture;
  • whether it runs behind the removable element;
  • whether a return onto the side panel is needed;
  • whether there will be a decorative plinth instead of a skirting board;
  • how the exposed end is finished.

Therefore, the product can be selected in advance, but the final skirting board footage comes after the furniture layout is fixed.

Wooden cornice: the profile is chosen before the exact order is calculated

The cornice affects the architecture of the room, so its profile is indeed worth choosing at the design stage.

Can be approved earlier:

  • height;
  • overhang;
  • pattern;
  • the material;
  • article number;
  • finishing.

Later they consider:

  • clean ceiling route;
  • internal and external corners;
  • niches;
  • tears;
  • number of whole planks;
  • useful reserve.

KZ-010, for example, has a cross-section of 66×51 mm; MDF currently comes in 2600 mm lengths, beech and oak — 2400 mm. If this profile is selected, the card KZ-010 must be saved in the specification until the control measurement.

Why the cornice is especially sensitive to ceiling changes

In the early plan, the ceiling line often looks simpler than the real object.

After engineering work, the following may appear:

  • linear diffuser;
  • curtain niche;
  • technological box;
  • inspection hatch;
  • additional beam;
  • change in the height of the ceiling unit.

If the cornice is calculated before these decisions, the clean perimeter is no longer relevant.

Therefore, the cornice can be reserved by article and material, but the quantitative order is best finalized after the ceiling geometry is approved.

Wooden molding: the most dangerous element for premature calculation

Molding is often purchased based on the wall layout, and the layout is sensitive to every change in the wall.

Let's imagine a frame around the central axis.

On the drawing everything is ready, but then:

  • the door was shifted by 80 mm;
  • the radiator turned out to be wider;
  • the socket block was relocated;
  • the cabinet was increased by 120 mm.

As a result, it's not just one short section that changes. The entire composition shifts.

That's why the following rule is especially useful for molding:

approve the profile in advance → finalize the layout based on the actual wall → then calculate the lengths.

For example, MLD-059 has a cross-section of 17×10 mm and is available in MDF 2600 mm, beech and oak 2400 mm. The product card MLD-059 defines the profile itself; the final quantity is determined by your layout.

Why "40 meters of molding" is not yet an order

Let's say there are ten frames of 800×1200 mm on the wall.

One frame:

2×0.8 + 2×1.2 = 4 m.

Ten frames:

40 m.

But the supplier sells whole products of a certain length. So next, cutting is needed.

If the stock length is 2400 mm, the sides 1200+1200 fit perfectly.

And the sides 800+800+800 also add up to exactly 2400.

For such a scheme, the arithmetic is very convenient.

But if after measurement the frame became 850×1250 mm, the previous cutting plan no longer works the same way.

The net linear meters change only slightly, but the number of useful segments from one stock length can change noticeably.

Buying building materials wholesale: what can be decided already at the design stage

At the project stage, it is already possible buy building materials wholesale only where a physical purchase does not create a risk of size changes. But it is almost always useful to lock in advance:

  • article numbers;
  • materials;
  • profile;
  • approximate requirement;
  • budget;
  • samples;
  • timelines for missing items.

That is, the design stage should end not with boxes at the site, but with an approved product specification.

This is especially important for items that are made to order or of which many are needed.

What is really worth ordering in advance

A physical early order is justified if several conditions are met at the same time.

For example:

  • the profile is non-standard;
  • a large batch is required;
  • the item is going into production;
  • the model is critical for the schedule;
  • exact dimensions have already been confirmed;
  • the profile repeats throughout the entire project;
  • there is a safe storage location.

In this case, waiting until the last day creates greater risk than buying early.

But even then, it is useful to separate:

the main approved part from the areas where measurements are still ongoing.

What is dangerous to buy before the control measurement

It is not worth finalizing the quantity when the geometry is still "live."

Typical cases:

  • skirting board with unapproved doors;
  • door casings before installing frames;
  • molding for frames near changing furniture;
  • cornice around a not-yet-finished ceiling niche;
  • profile along a built-in wardrobe;
  • complex composition near radiators and equipment.

Here, early product selection is right, but early quantity ordering is not.

Buy building materials wholesale in one batch or split by statuses

buy construction materials wholesale in three ways.

Option A. Everything at once

Suitable when the entire geometry is confirmed, storage is organized, and the batch is needed in the next installation cycle.

Option B. SKUs approved, physical order later

Suitable when the design is finalized, but the reference dimensions are still changing.

Option C. Splitting by phases

For example:

  • first floor;
  • second floor;
  • common area;
  • separate building.

This option is especially useful on a long project: there is a single specification, and the quantity is confirmed as the zones become ready.

How to split the schedule into “approved” and “awaiting measurement”

Add a STATUS column to the table.

Position Article Material Guideline Status
Baseboard, bedrooms PLT-___ Oak 82 м AWAITING DOORS
Cornice, living room KZ-___ MDF 31 м Can be ordered
Molding, hallway MLD-___ Beech 64 м AWAITING MEASUREMENT
Casing ___ Oak ___ AWAITING BOXES

Such a table makes the process transparent.

The manager sees not only the “approximate volume” but also the readiness level of each line item.

Why “approximately 200 meters” is not enough

For a wholesale order, you need to know exactly what is behind the number.

Working line:

Field Value
Article number PLT-___
Material Oak
Cross-section ___
Length of one item ___
Net length ___
Number of lengths ___
installation reserve ___
Reserve after delivery ___

If the supplier only receives "oak skirting board, approximately 200 m", part of the calculation remains based on their assumptions.

A project order should reduce the number of assumptions.

Buy building materials wholesale: long-length items are not counted only in metres

When you need buy building materials wholesale, for linear mouldings the key number is not always clean metres.

Example: requirement 53.2 m, item length — 2.4 m.

53,2 ÷ 2,4 = 22,17.

Minimum — 23 lengths.

Physical volume:

23 × 2.4 = 55.2 m.

Theoretical remainder — 2 m.

But this does not mean that the entire remainder is usable. After cutting, it may turn into several short pieces.

Therefore, the linear meters are converted into a parts map, and only then into the number of whole products.

How built-in furniture changes the molding layout

For a wardrobe spanning the entire wall, you need to decide:

  • whether the frame runs behind the furniture;
  • where it ends;
  • whether the axis of the adjacent wall is maintained;
  • whether the cornice continues;
  • whether the baseboard remains;
  • whether a separate end unit is needed.

If the furniture maker changes the width of the cabinet by even 100–150 mm, the wall layout may require recalculation.

Therefore, the order is:

approve the furniture → update the wall markings → take a control measurement → finalize the molding.

Not the other way around.

When it's time to take the control measurement

It is useful to use readiness criteria rather than a date.

The measurement can be considered final when:

  • the main partitions are ready;
  • door openings are formed;
  • the door type is determined;
  • built-in furniture is approved;
  • finished floor and ceiling levels are clear;
  • niches and engineering boxes will not be relocated;
  • wall layout is approved;
  • the designer is not expecting critical changes.

If two or three items are still open, the finished square footage remains preliminary.

The control measurement should record individual segments

It is not enough to write:

living room — 42 m of skirting board.

It is better to have a map:

wall A — 5.42 m;
wall B — 3.18 m;
section up to the door — 1.74 m;
section after the cabinet — 2.05 m.

This level of detail allows you to verify the cutting layout and identify exactly where the project changed.

If the total increased by 1.2 m, the segments show the reason.

How to calculate the reserve without an automatic “+10%”

A universal percentage is not always reasonable.

The reserve depends on:

  • complexity of corners;
  • length of the stock piece;
  • Cutting;
  • number of short sections;
  • ability to use offcuts;
  • repeatability of the room.

For a simple long skirting board, one additional length may be enough.

Complex moulded frames will require a different approach.

Therefore, the reserve is calculated after the cutting plan, not before it.

Installation and repair reserves are different things

The installation reserve is intended for current work.

It may be used for:

  • cuts;
  • incorrect cut;
  • damage;
  • replacing a defective section.

The repair reserve must remain after the project is handed over.

For a hotel, restaurant, or large apartment, it is useful to keep several elements of the same article number for future repairs.

In the statement, these are two separate lines.

Why it is better to order the repair reserve together with the main batch

The reason is not the discount.

Together with the main batch, it is easier to keep:

  • the same SKU;
  • the same material;
  • the same size;
  • the same finish option.

For natural wood, even one batch does not guarantee identical grain, but buying more later adds even more uncertainty.

Therefore, it is better not to leave the critical reserve for later.

How to store the reserve after handover

The remaining stock must be labeled:

SKU / material / length / finish / room / order date.

Five years later, the label "oak molding" is almost useless.

The SKU lets you quickly understand exactly what was installed.

For painted products, it is also useful to save the finish code/description.

Buying building materials wholesale: what to check before paying

Before buy construction materials wholesale, check one final bill of materials.

Check Status
Item codes approved Yes / no
Material is specified Yes / no
Cross-section and length are known Yes / no
Verification measurement completed Yes / no
Meterage calculated by segments Yes / no
Cutting plan checked Yes / no
Number of stock pieces determined Yes / no
Installation reserve determined Yes / no
Repair reserve determined Yes / no
“Awaiting measurement” statuses closed Yes / no
Lead time and availability checked Yes / no
Room breakdown specified Yes / no

If several lines remain “no,” it is better not to turn payment into a way to speed up an unresolved project.

The sample should be ordered before the final square footage

A physical sample does not depend on the final square meters.

Its purpose is to confirm:

  • profile;
  • scale;
  • the material;
  • surface;
  • the future paint color;
  • the combination with doors and furniture.

The current STAVROS website has Product samples, while in the mouldings group, samples start from 99 ₽.

Therefore, a good timeline looks like this:

early stage → sample → SKU approval → control measurement → main order.

Not the other way around.

When an early order actually helps the timeline

Suppose you have chosen a profile that is made to order.

The control measurement will be in two weeks, and manufacturing takes time.

There are two ways:

wait for the measurement and only then start the whole process, risking delaying installation;

or

agree in advance on the article number, material, sample, and production readiness, and confirm the final quantity after measurement, if such a procedure is allowed for the specific order.

The second option can reduce downtime, but it must be agreed with the salesperson/production. You cannot promise that any custom production will start without an approved quantity.

What to do if one section changed after ordering

There is no need to automatically recalculate the entire batch.

First, determine:

  1. which segment exactly changed;
  2. whether it affects the total finished linear meters;
  3. whether it changes the cutting plan;
  4. whether the already ordered reserve is sufficient;
  5. whether an additional length is needed.

Example:

24 lengths of 2.4 m each were ordered = 57.6 m.

After the wall change, the net requirement increased from 53.2 to 54.1 m.

Formally, the reserve remains:

57.6 − 54.1 = 3.5 m.

But if the new section requires a continuous 2.2 m segment, you need to check whether the cutting map contains an actual stock length from which it can be obtained. A total remainder of 3.5 m is not enough if it is distributed across five short pieces.

Phased project: one SKU, multiple purchase dates

If the renovation is proceeding floor by floor, there is no need to wait for the entire building to be completed.

It can be divided:

  • floor 1 — final measurement completed;
  • floor 2 — doors are still being replaced;
  • hall — layout is ready;
  • restaurant area — furniture is still being approved.

The specification remains unified by SKU, but the status and quantity differ.

This makes it possible not to delay completed areas because of those rooms where the geometry is not yet finalized.

A product catalog is needed at the beginning and at the end of the process

At the beginning, the catalog helps you choose a profile and save the item code.

At the end — to check before payment that the configuration has not changed.

To choose a wooden finish, you can open the STAVROS molding catalog.

Between these two points lies all the project work:

sample → binding → control measurement → cutting → quantity → reserve.

Order readiness matrix: what can be approved earlier and what later

For the procurement specialist, it is more useful not to ask the general question “is the site ready or not,” but to check the status of each product group.

Group Can be approved in advance When to lock in the quantity What can change the calculation
Baseboard item code, material, height, profile after doors and built-in furniture boxes, cabinets, niches, portals
Cornice item code, cross-section, material after ceiling niches and engineering diffusers, curtain niches, boxes
Molding profile, material, frame principle after final wall layout doors, radiators, sockets, furniture
Casing model and material after selecting and installing the door system actual opening and frame
Rail profile and pitch after confirming the clear field width corners, junctions, built-in elements

This table allows the project to proceed in parallel.

For example, the molding has already been selected and the physical sample approved, but the furniture near the TV wall is still changing. In the schedule, there is no need to return the item to the "nothing decided" state. The correct status is:

SKU APPROVED / QUANTITY AWAITING CONTROL MEASUREMENT.

This way the designer does not reopen the profile selection, and the purchaser does not order premature linear footage.

The math says "there is enough material," but cutting requires one more length

This is a key check for the long-length item.

Suppose you need to make four visible skirting board sections:

  • 2.30 m;
  • 2.30 m;
  • 1.95 m;
  • 1.95 m

Net total:

2.30 + 2.30 + 1.95 + 1.95 = 8.50 m

If the product is 2.4 m long, simple division gives:

8,50 ÷ 2,4 = 3,54.

One might think four lengths would be enough: 9.6 m in total.

But let's try cutting.

Two sections of 2.30 m almost completely use up two separate lengths.

Two sections of 1.95 m remain. Both cannot be obtained from one 2.4 m length.

So two more lengths are required.

In total, 4 lengths are indeed enough in this specific case: 2 for 2.30 and 2 for 1.95. But the usable remainder consists of four short offcuts, and they cannot be used for these sections.

Now let's add a fifth section of 1.20 m.

Total net footage:

9.70 m.

Simple division:

9.70 ÷ 2.4 = 4.04, meaning at least 5 lengths.

Five lengths already give 12 m, but the actual cutting plan still needs to be checked: a short section of 1.20 m can only be obtained from the leftover after another cut when the layout actually allows it.

The point of the example is not the specific number, but the principle:

the total leftover is not equal to the usable remaining offcut.

For moulding frames this rule is even more important because of the many repeating sides.

A phased project: how not to hold up finished rooms because of one unfinished area

Let's imagine an apartment or a small commercial project with four areas.

Bedroom: doors installed, wardrobe approved, walls ready.
Living room: everything is ready except the built-in bookcase.
Hall: the molding layout is still being adjusted.
Study: fully ready for finishing.

A bad approach is to wait until the entire project is closed.

Another bad approach is to order all the trim according to the old design.

A workable option is one specification with different statuses:

Zone Skirting board Molding Crown Molding
Bedroom Can be ordered Can be ordered Can be ordered
Living room WAITING FOR FURNITURE WAITING FOR FURNITURE Can be ordered
Hall Can be ordered WAITING FOR LAYOUT Can be ordered
Office Can be ordered Can be ordered Can be ordered

This way, the ready items can be combined into the first batch, while the questionable ones can be left for the second.

This is especially useful for a long renovation: the product decisions do not change, but the physical purchase follows actual readiness.

Freeze point: when the design stops being “preliminary”

Each item must have a date after which changes are considered a new revision of the project.

Before this date, it is acceptable to change the profile, lengths, and layout.

After it, any change undergoes a separate review:

  1. what changed;
  2. how much footage is affected;
  3. whether the number of lengths changes;
  4. whether the reserve is sufficient;
  5. whether the not-yet-shipped part needs to be canceled or adjusted;
  6. whether the schedule gets a new version.

This is not bureaucracy for the sake of documentation. Such a checkpoint protects against the situation where a designer changes one wall and the purchaser only finds out about it after payment.

In a small apartment, the freeze point can be the approved control measurement.

In a large facility — a separate date for each floor or room.

How to check order readiness in five minutes

Before sending the invoice for payment, take each line and ask four questions.

Is the product finally selected?
The SKU, material, and profile are approved.

Is the site geometry stable?
Doors, furniture, ceiling, and engineering elements do not change the route.

Has the quantity been converted into whole units?
There are not only meters, but also the number of lengths.

Does the reserve have a purpose?
It's clear what will go into installation and what will remain after handover.

If at least one answer is "no", the line is not yet ready for physical purchase.

If all four are "yes", it can be moved to the status CAN BE ORDERED.

Nine mistakes when buying finish trim early

1. Ordering the entire volume based on the design drawing

The drawing may not account for actual construction deviations.

2. Calculating baseboard before doors and built-in furniture

The perimeter changes.

3. Calculating molding before the final wall layout

Even a small offset changes the lengths of the parts.

4. Measure the cornice up to ceiling niches and utilities

New gaps and angles appear.

5. Buying by meters without converting to lengths

The product length and cutting layout are not taken into account.

6. Adding the same percentage of reserve to all profiles

Different geometry gives a different actual reserve.

7. Mixing installation and repair reserve

After installation, nothing remains for future replacement.

8. Not labeling leftovers

A year later, you have to guess the product code.

9. Putting off the SKU choice until the very installation

You may run into a lead time or the unavailability of the required configuration.

Ready-made order sequence for wooden finish trim

Practical algorithm:

  1. Choose a profile.
  2. Get or view a physical sample.
  3. Lock in the product code and material.
  4. Link the profile to doors, furniture, floor, and ceiling.
  5. Mark in the schedule the items still awaiting measurement.
  6. Wait for stable finish geometry.
  7. Perform a verification measurement by segments.
  8. Recalculate the cutting plan.
  9. Convert meters into the number of whole lengths.
  10. Add an installation reserve.
  11. Add a separate repair reserve.
  12. Check the deadline, availability, and packaging.
  13. Close all "waiting" statuses.
  14. place the order.

This sequence helps buy construction materials wholesale not "as early as possible" and not "at the last moment," but at the moment when the item has already been selected and the quantity has become reliable.

When it's too early to buy

The final order is best postponed if:

  • door openings are still changing;
  • built-in furniture is not approved;
  • ceiling geometry is not finalized;
  • the molding layout exists only on the old drawing;
  • only the style has been chosen, but not the item code;
  • there is no control measurement;
  • the standard product length is unclear;
  • the reserve is stated as a general percentage without cutting.

At the same time, item codes and samples can be approved right now.

It is precisely this separation that prevents the construction site from disrupting the choice of material and at the same time protects money from premature purchase.

Questions before wholesale ordering of wooden finishing trim

What can be chosen before the renovation is finished?

Product code, profile, material, size, sample, and future finish.

What is better to calculate after the control measurement?

Final linear footage, number of lengths, cutting plan, and reserve.

When should skirting boards be calculated definitively?

After the doors, built-in furniture, and actual perimeter have been finalized.

When should the cornice be calculated?

After the ceiling contour, niches, and engineering units are ready.

Why is it dangerous to calculate moulding too early?

Because a small change to doors, furniture or sockets can change the entire wall layout.

Should you always wait until the entire project is fully completed?

No. Finished rooms or floors can be calculated and ordered separately with an overall approved specification.

Why can't you just buy “53.2 m”?

Linear moulding is supplied as whole pieces of a specific length. You need a cutting plan and the number of lengths.

Is a 10% reserve always necessary?

No. The reserve is better calculated based on the actual cutting plan and the complexity of the joints.

How does a repair reserve differ from an installation reserve?

The installation reserve is used during the works, while the repair reserve is kept after the project is handed over.

Can I order samples in advance?

Yes. It's best to get a sample before the final quantity calculation.

What should I do if one section changed after placing the order?

Recalculate the specific segment and the cutting map, rather than automatically ordering "as many extra meters as were added."

Where can I view the linear footage?

В catalog of wooden and MDF trim by STAVROS; the selected product codes then need to be recorded in the project specification.
