In our example, six oak planks give 14,400 mm of material, six MDF — 15,600 mm. With the same net requirement of 13,050 mm, MDF has 1,200 mm more nominal remainder.
If you look only at the utilization percentage, the oak map looks more efficient:
13 050 ÷ 14 400 ≈ 90,6%.
MDF:
13 050 ÷ 15 600 ≈ 83,7%.
But MDF has one fewer mounting part and one fewer straight joint. For a painted white cornice, this may be more valuable than a higher material utilization percentage.
When a 930 mm remainder is truly useful
It can cover a short return, a fragment above built-in furniture, or become a spare part for repairs. But only if the profile orientation and ends are suitable.
When a large remainder is still waste
If the entire room is already calculated and there is no section up to 930 mm long, a large offcut does not turn into savings. It can be kept as a repair reserve, but the commercial value has already been paid.

In this case, the new task is simpler: keep oak 2400 mm, but replace the tinting system with an opaque one. However, even here you cannot use the old finishing estimate without checking. Sanding, priming, pore filling, and enamel technology for oak differ from the approach to MDF.
That is, the very fact of white color does not give a universal answer "MDF is better." It only opens the possibility to compare two materials without the requirement to preserve visible texture.
KZ-002 length 2000 mm: the third purchasing length can also change the outcome
The card contains not only 2400 and 2600 mm. For beech and oak, there is also 2000 mm. In our topic, the original specification was exactly 2400 mm, but before final payment it is useful to see the entire size range.
For a total length of 13,050 mm:
13,050 ÷ 2000 = 6.525 → minimum 7 planks.
Nominal capacity of seven slats:
7 × 2000 = 14,000 mm.
Remainder:
14,000 − 13,050 = 950 mm.
One of the possible nominal cutting layouts:
- A=4880 → 2000 + 2000 + 880;
- B=3640 → 2000 + 1640;
- C=2710 → 2000 + 710;
- D=1820 → 1820.
Parts 880 and 710 can be obtained from one 2000-millimeter slat, because 880+710=1590 mm. In total, seven slats are indeed sufficient in length.
2000 mm is cheaper per piece — so is it more profitable?
According to the current card, oak 2000 mm costs 10,290 ₽, oak 2400 mm costs 12,660 ₽.
Seven slats of 2000 mm:
7 × 10 290 = 72 030 ₽.
Six slats of 2400 mm:
6 × 12 660 = 75 960 ₽.
At the product level, the 2000-millimeter scheme is even cheaper by 3,930 ₽. But it requires seven items, more packaging units, and does not reduce the number of direct joints in our example. Therefore, “one slat is cheaper” and “a better finished order” are different criteria.

Delivery 2600 mm: fewer joints won't help if the long-length item doesn't fit through the site
Before switching from 2400 to 2600 mm, you need to check the path:
- freight or passenger elevator;
- staircase turns;
- entry doors;
- corridor;
- path to the room;
- storage location before installation.
If 2600 mm cannot be brought in whole, the plank cannot be automatically cut at the entrance. Such a transport cut must match the approved parts map. Otherwise, the advantage of longer MDF disappears even before installation.
The final payment and delivery of wooden moldings should be checked against the specific number of items, material, and address.

This clearly shows: the article number hasn't changed, but the order has actually become different.
Wall 2450–2600 mm: the zone where the transition to MDF 2600 mm is especially noticeable
If the project has many sections slightly longer than 2400 mm, the new length can radically change the layout. Let's consider four independent segments:
- 2450 mm;
- 2520 mm;
- 2580 mm;
- 2600 mm.
For oak 2400 mm, each section requires at least two pieces. For MDF 2600 mm, each is covered by one solid plank. But this does not mean that four walls will need four oak additional planks: short extensions can be obtained from leftovers. Therefore, savings should be calculated based on the overall layout.
What changes for sure
Number of mounting pieces and direct joints. Even if leftovers allow keeping the same number of solid planks, MDF 2600 mm can make each such section solid.
What does not change automatically
Cost, number of boxes, finishing time, and total length of paid material. All this requires a separate comparison.
Boundary wall lengths: where 2600 wins, and where 2400 mm
Wall 5200 mm: where 2600 mm gives ideal multiplicity
For MDF:
2600 + 2600 = 5200 mm.
Two solid factory strips, one direct joint, zero nominal leftover on this wall.
For oak 2400 mm:
2400 + 2400 = 4800 mm.
400 mm is missing. Minimum three mounting pieces and two joints.
If a room has two opposite walls of 5200 mm each, they can be a strong argument for the 2600 mm version with white enamel. However, you need to check whether 400 mm extensions from the remainder of other walls are used — this can preserve the total number of oak panels.
Wall 7200 mm: when 2400 mm oak has perfect multiplicity
There are also reverse cases:
2400 × 3 = 7200 mm.
Oak covers the wall with three equal pieces.
MDF 2600 mm:
2600 + 2600 = 5200 mm, leaving 2000 mm.
Also three pieces, but with a different length for the last segment. The quantity is the same. If the design requires symmetrical joints, the oak multiplicity of 2400 may even be more convenient.
This example is needed to avoid turning the article into an advertisement for 2600 mm. Each room has its own geometry.
How to choose the position of the straight joint KZ-002 with the new 2600 mm map
The cutting program can find a solution with minimal waste, but it does not know the room's architecture. For each direct connection, an allowable zone must be specified.
Good places
- behind a tall cabinet or built-in furniture;
- near a less noticeable vertical boundary;
- in an area with even frontal light;
- where the connection does not align with the central axis of the fireplace or portal.
Bad places
- exactly in the center of the main wall;
- above the axis of a door portal without a design reason;
- in the brightest sliding light;
- a few centimeters from the corner where there is already a miter joint;
- on the short piece that looks like a random filler.
In our MDF map, wall A=4880 mm is assembled as 2600+2280. The straight joint is located at a distance of 2600 mm from one corner. If this is visually inconvenient, you can rotate the layout or choose two other lengths, for example 2440+2440 mm, but then no piece uses the factory length completely and two remnants are formed. The designer together with the installer chooses the priority.
White enamel and straight joints: why MDF does not eliminate painting work
Covering paint makes the color uniform, but does not physically "glue" two pieces together. A straight joint requires:
- precise geometry of the ends;
- dry fitting;
- stable base;
- compatible adhesive/installation technology;
- joint preparation;
- of the primer and finish according to the accepted system.
If the joint works or opens due to the substrate, white enamel alone will not save it. Therefore, reducing the number of joints from four to three is a practical advantage, but not a guarantee of a perfect surface.
If KZ-002 is painted together with the ceiling and wall: what to record in the painting map
White color can have different codes and gloss levels. In the specification, it is useful to record:
- the exact RAL/NCS or another agreed code;
- matte/semi-matte gloss level;
- primer for MDF;
- separate preparation of fresh edges;
- sequence of installation and painting;
- who is responsible for the final finishing of straight joints.
If KZ-002 is to blend with the ceiling, the difference in gloss may be more noticeable than a slight difference in shade. Therefore, the sample should be viewed in the actual room lighting.
Changing the material after measurements but before ordering: what can be kept from the old project
Not everything needs to be redone from scratch. The following are preserved:
- room geometry;
- selected KZ-002 profile;
- its cross-section 104×102×23×7 mm;
- architectural cornice line;
- position of doors, windows, and furniture;
- list of internal and external corners.
Recalculated:
- lengths of purchase strips;
- locations of direct joints;
- number of whole products;
- remainders;
- packaging;
- finishing;
- final price.
This way the project preserves the architecture but gets a new production sheet.
What to do if the material change happened late
Material change after oak has already been ordered: recalculation does not always mean a new purchase
If oak KZ-002 has already been paid for or is in production, first find out the order status. A change may still be possible; it may not. It is economically pointless to automatically buy MDF on top of an already manufactured batch just because the designer changed the finish.
Options:
- keep the oak and paint it with opaque enamel;
- try to change the order before production starts;
- use oak on another agreed section;
- only after calculation, issue a new MDF.
Before changing the order, you need to obtain the seller's and manufacturer's terms, rather than assuming that the material can be replaced for free at any time.
If part of the oak KZ-002 is already installed, mixing it with MDF should only be done according to the project.
Theoretically, two bases can be covered with one white enamel. In practice, they have different properties and may react differently to preparation, humidity, and fastening. If one wall is already made of oak and the rest are planned to be made of MDF, the following must be agreed upon:
- a unified visible profile;
- the same joint line;
- a painting system for two bases;
- the material transition point;
- repairability.
The worst decision is to change the material in the middle of one long feature wall without a reason just to use up leftovers.
How to compare two KZ-002 estimates without self-deception
The comparison table must have the same composition of costs.

What errors most often occur when switching from oak 2400 to MDF 2600
Error 1. Leave the old quantity without a map
Even if in a specific example the number accidentally remained six, this needs to be proven by recalculation.
Error 2. Assume that 2600 mm always reduces the number of planks
At 13,050 mm, both options required six.
Error 3. Look only at the total waste percentage
For MDF it is higher, but there are fewer joints.
Error 4. Counting all remnants as one long piece
2550 mm of remnant is several separate fragments.
Error 5. Placing a short extension on the main wall to save money
Architectural visibility is more important than minimal waste.
Error 6. Not accounting for corner cuts
A tight piece of 2340 mm from a 2400-mm plank may not have sufficient technological margin.
Error 7. Calling MDF solid wood
The profile is the same, the material is different.
Error 8. Assuming white enamel is an automatic reason to reject oak
The material concept can be more important than price.
Error 9. Comparing 2,460 and 12,660 ₽ without quantity
A full cart is required.
Error 10. Not recalculating the package
Standards for MDF and solid wood differ.

A long plank may not fit along the route.
