But sometimes it is different. The small KRPU-034 fits in height, but its protrusion of 94 mm turns out to be too large for a shallow shelf. When a portal is designed from scratch, the shelf depth, side panel width, and opening position can be pre-selected for the bracket. When everything is already done, the situation is reversed: the bracket must fit into the existing dimensions.

Let's imagine a shallow decorative shelf. In a frontal photo, the small KRPU-034 looks great. Its height of 237 mm suits the side panel, and its width of 90 mm does not intrude into the opening. But from the side, the bracket protrudes 94 mm, while the shelf itself visually extends from the wall only slightly.

As a result, the decorative "support" may end up almost flush with the front edge of the shelf or even visually extend beyond it. Sometimes such volume is justified. Sometimes it looks as if the bracket belongs to a different, deeper portal.

With the large option, the check is even more important: the 115 mm protrusion is already hard to ignore.

Therefore, for KRPU-034 it is not enough to ask: "does 237 or 290 mm fit in height?" A second question is needed: "what happens to this volume in profile?"

Make two templates, not one

A regular paper fitting of the decorative overlay is done on the facade. For KRPU-034, this is not enough.

This check often answers the question of whether the shelf needs reworking.

Do not check KRPU-034 only on a portal photo.

A photo is useful for the first sketch, but it hides depth.

In a frontal shot, the 237 × 90 × 94 mm bracket appears almost as a flat 237 × 90 mm element. The 94 mm projection disappears from the picture.

The same applies to the large version: 290 × 110 mm looks like a large decorative overlay, although the actual part extends 115 mm from the wall.

For modernization, it is not necessary to fully measure the room. A working map of the area under the shelf is needed.

Write down:

1. the height of the free section from the bottom of the shelf to the nearest lower boundary of the decor;

2. the width of the free vertical zone to the right of the opening;

3. the same width on the left;

4. the distance from the inner edge of the intended bracket to the opening;

5. the actual protrusion of the fireplace shelf from the wall;

6. the presence of protruding frames, moldings, or pilasters;

7. the distance to the adjacent wall, furniture, or corner;

There is no need to turn these values into universal standards. They simply allow comparing the existing portal with two real volumes of KRPU-034.

The quickest answer: whether the small KRPU-034 237 × 90 × 94 mm fits.

It makes sense to start with the smaller size.

Place the front template 237 × 90 mm under the shelf.

If it already overlaps the opening, encroaches on the side molding, or does not fit in height, checking the large variant is almost pointless: it is even bigger.

If the small template fits, proceed to the 94 mm offset.

Look at the portal from the side.

The bracket should look connected to the shelf and the side part, not like a separate block accidentally glued under the finished structure.

If 94 mm already seems excessive for the actual depth of the portal, the large KRPU-034 with a 115 mm offset will likely require an even more serious revision of the composition.

The large variant is logical for a large portal where the small one gets lost.

For example:

• wide shelf;

• massive side posts;

• high portal;

• large opening;

• spacious wall;

• already existing large molding.

But all these signs do not replace centimeters.

Before order bracket KRPU-034 made of polyurethane, attach exactly the 290 × 110 mm template and separately show yourself the 115 mm overhang.

The large model should look convincing simultaneously from the front, side, and at an angle.

The shelf is already ready: does the bracket need to literally "hold" it?

If the shelf is already secured and structurally functional, the decorative bracket does not have to become its new technical fastening.

Its visual task is to create the feeling of architectural support.

Therefore, the upper part of a decorative console is usually perceived most naturally when it is logically connected to the underside of the shelf. If there is a random gap left between the bracket and the shelf, it looks detached. If the element overlaps the shelf or requires cutting out part of it just for fitting, that is already a sign that the finished geometry and the chosen size do not match.

Reworking the shelf for the sake of a bracket you like is only worth it when you are consciously ready to change the entire portal. If the task initially sounds like "add a pair without rework," it is better to choose a size that works with the existing architecture.

Checking the shelf: the main question is not "will the bracket fit," but "will it look like its support"

On a finished portal, the shelf already sets the depth and scale of the entire upper part. Therefore, the bracket is evaluated not separately, but in pair with it.

First, measure the actual shelf overhang from the wall. Then compare it with 94 and 115 mm.

Here, it is impossible to establish a universal rule like "the bracket should always be 20 mm less than the shelf depth." Such a standard is not confirmed within this task. But visually, it is useful to check three situations.

The bracket is noticeably smaller than the shelf overhang

The shelf protrudes forward more strongly, the decorative console is underneath it and reads as a support. Often this ratio looks natural, but the final impression depends on the shape of the shelf itself and the relief of the portal.

The bracket is roughly comparable to the shelf projection

From the side, a denser architectural mass appears. On a large classical portal, this can look convincing. On a light shelf, it is too active.

The bracket visually extends beyond the front edge of the shelf

This is not automatically prohibited by geometry, but for a finished portal it requires particularly strict evaluation. The question arises: why is the decorative support deeper than the element it is supposed to visually support? If the answer is not found in the overall architecture, most likely the selected KRPU-034 is too large for this shelf.

This is exactly where the small and large variants can yield completely different results.

The fireplace opening is the second boundary that must not be violated for the sake of symmetry

A pair of brackets is usually placed on the left and right. Therefore, there is a natural desire to position them as symmetrically as possible relative to the portal axis.

But symmetry should not force the decor to extend into the opening.

Measure the distance from the inner boundary of the side post to the edge of the firebox opening. Then apply a template 90 or 110 mm wide.

If the decorative bracket is entirely on the side plane, the task is simpler.

If part of the template extends into the opening, you need to understand what exactly is there.

If the original goal is minimal intervention, first try the smaller KRPU-034 or others decorative polyurethane brackets.

Side posts: 90 and 110 mm should be compared with the actual plane, not with the outer width of the portal

A portal may have a wide side section, but not all of its surface is free.

It may already contain:

• pilaster;

• flutes;

• a panel;

• molding frame;

• vertical overlay;

• capital;

• base transition.

Therefore, for KRPU-034, measure the clean mounting area.

If the free plane is 100 mm, the small variant with a width of 90 mm potentially fits, while the large one at 110 mm does not without intersecting existing relief.

If 140–150 mm is free, both versions can be compared by scale.

But even here, you shouldn't strive to fill the side panel as densely as possible. Around the bracket, there may be a need for visual background so that the relief reads separately.

Height 237 or 290 mm: what happens between the shelf and the lower part of the portal

The overhang often turns out to be a surprise, but the height can also make you abandon the chosen size.

Small KRPU-034 — 237 mm.

Large — 290 mm.

The difference is 53 mm.

If there is free space under the shelf, for example, a large vertical field, both options can be safely tried on.

If a plinth, a pilaster of a different pattern, or a horizontal molding already starts below, the extra 53 mm can bring the large bracket right up to the adjacent element.

As a result, the reliefs start to "collide": the console hasn't ended yet, but a new architectural boundary already begins below.

For a finished portal, this is more important than the desire to choose the maximum size.

The small KRPU-034 does not have to be "insufficient" if the portal is large.

There's the reverse error: since the portal is big, it automatically needs the 290-millimeter version.

But the size of the decorative console depends not only on the external width of the entire structure.

Perhaps the shelf is massive, but the side posts are narrow.

Or the opening is wide, but the space directly under the shelf is limited by moldings.

Or the entire portal already has a rich relief, so a more compact pair creates the right accent without overloading.

Therefore, first apply both templates. The large one does not get an advantage just because of its size.

A fireplace portal is usually built symmetrically, so two decorative brackets on the right and left look like the most obvious solution.

However, there are asymmetrical portals, corner compositions, and projects where one side is connected to furniture or a wall differently.

There is no need to buy a second part just because the word "bracket" is traditionally associated with a pair.

But for a typical central portal, a single console will require a strong compositional explanation.

When rework is not technically necessary, but visually needed

There is a more subtle situation.

The brackets physically fit.

When the small KRPU-034 fits, but the large one already forces you to change the shelf

Typical situation.

The shelf has a moderate overhang.

The 94 mm of the small element look normal.

The 115 mm of the large one start to extend almost to the front edge or beyond it.

In height, both fit.

Both are beautiful from the front.

If you look only from the front, you want the large one.

But the side view clearly shows: for it, the shelf must be deeper.

If you don't want to change the shelf, the choice is effectively made in favor of the small KRPU-034.

Even a small KRPU-034 is too deep.

That is also possible.

Especially with decorative false fireplaces assembled almost flat against the wall.

The portal may protrude only a small depth, because it was originally conceived as a graphic frame, not a massive architectural structure.

Then 94 mm begins to create a new spatial depth that did not exist before.

If this is not part of the design intent, KRPU-034 may be unsuitable specifically in terms of size.

When the large KRPU-034 looks more convincing despite the larger overhang.

On a massive portal, the situation is reversed.

The shelf is deep.

The side posts are wide.

The opening is large.

The small template 237 × 90 mm looks almost like a decorative overlay rather than an architectural console.

The large one, 290 × 110 mm, connects the shelf and verticals much more confidently.

The 115 mm projection remains within the overall depth of the structure.

Then the additional 2,500 ₽ per pair may be justified precisely by scale, not by the idea of "bigger means better."

Check the adjacent wall and corner

The portal may not be centered on a large empty wall, but close to a corner.

From the front, the left and right brackets look symmetrical.

But on the right, the large KRPU-034 with a 115 mm projection ends up close to the perpendicular wall, door trim, or furniture.

This is already a spatial conflict.

Therefore, the side template is needed on both sides, not just where it is more convenient to take photos.

It is especially important to check the passages and areas where a person regularly ends up near the portal.

Don't forget about the baseboard and lower architecture if the bracket is long.

A height of 290 mm can bring the large KRPU-034 closer to other horizontal elements of the portal.

If there is already a developed side rack, a lower decorative belt, or a transition to the plinth under the shelf, the large bracket can take up almost all of the free vertical space.

The small one will leave more calm space.

Both solutions can be correct. But this needs to be seen on the same portal, not chosen from individual product photos.

Portal with an electric fireplace: decorative fitting should not overlap the requirements of the hearth itself.

If an electric fireplace is already installed inside the finished portal, KRPU-034 is added around the existing equipment, not the other way around.

It is necessary to maintain access to the functional parts of the fireplace, not to cover ventilation zones, and not to obstruct opening or servicing, if such elements are provided by the design of the specific model.

Universal distances for any electric fireplace cannot be assigned in this article: they depend on the device itself and its instructions.

then, the existing opening;

after — decorative template KRPU-034.

If the bracket requires disrupting a functional zone, the decorative idea yields to technical requirements.

A false fireplace without a heating device: more freedom in geometry, but proportions still remain

For a purely decorative portal without a working fireplace, the issue of heat zones may be absent, but dimensions do not disappear.

Here it is even more evident how much KRPU-034 corresponds to the architecture of the false fireplace itself.

A small flat portal with a conditional niche may turn out to be too light for a pair of large consoles 290 × 110 × 115 mm.

A more massive decorative fireplace, on the contrary, will gain the needed depth from a large pair.

That is, the absence of equipment simplifies functional verification, but does not eliminate scale verification.

If the portal has real heat or an open flame, the issue cannot be resolved by template alone.

KRPU-034 is made of polyurethane. Therefore, in an area of real thermal exposure, it is not enough to ensure that the part physically fits.

It is necessary to consider the limitations of the specific heating or fire equipment, materials around the fire source, and requirements for safe distances. For a real wood-burning fireplace, a decorative polyurethane solution cannot be automatically transferred from a fake fireplace or electric fireplace scenario.

How to check KRPU-034 on an already painted portal

A finished portal often means another feature: the surface is already finished.

That is, you cannot simply say "glue the bracket" and consider the task closed.

First, you need to understand what exactly the decorative console will be attached to:

• painted wall;

• painted polyurethane element;

• wood;

• MDF;

• plastered surface;

• other finishes.

The specific mounting material is selected based on the actual substrate and its recommendations.

If the coating is peeling, loose, or poorly adhered, the decorative pair cannot be used as a way to hide the problem. First, a surface suitable for installation is restored.

But there is no need to add frames just because "there should be more stucco."

A finished portal is valuable precisely because most of the architecture is already resolved.

First, the small template is checked. If it also conflicts, it's better not to force KRPU-034 to fit.

Scenario 5. The portal is placed next to a perpendicular wall

The space on the left is free.

The corner on the right is close.

The frontal view is ideal.

But the large KRPU-034 with a 115 mm offset comes too close to the side wall and visually squeezes the right part.

The small 94 mm one may solve the problem.

If not, a different model is needed.

Scenario 6. The portal already has large pilasters

The side posts are expressive on their own.

KRPU-034 adds another strong relief.

The large size physically fits, but the architecture becomes too saturated.
