More than 20 years on the market

The company's success began in 2002, when two artists — Andrey Ragozin and Evgeny Tsapko — created a small creative workshop for producing wooden carved items. The masters' work was quickly noticed, and within a year they were invited to participate in the reconstruction of the Konstantinovskiy Palace in Strelna.

After the success of this project, the company focused on recreating palace interiors, furniture, church furnishings, and carved decorations in various artistic styles. They worked with cultural heritage sites: The Hermitage, the Alexandrovsky Palace, the Troitsko-Izmaylovsky Cathedral, the Sheremetyevsky Mansion, and many others.

The masters' task — and still is — to create wooden items with the highest level of detail and understanding of every element, based on impeccable knowledge of artistic laws and interior styles.

W40V1 baseboard from HI WOOD polystyrene — a compact solution for minimalist interiors

In modern interior design, low-profile decorative elements are gaining increasing popularity, performing their functions subtly and discreetly.Polystyrene baseboardThe W40V1 model from the South Korean manufacturer HI WOOD, with compact dimensions of 40 × 10 × 2000 mm, represents the ideal embodiment of minimalist philosophy in finishing.Polystyrene floor baseboardIt features a minimal height of 40 mm and an ultrathin thickness of 10 mm, making it practically invisible while performing its protective and decorative functions without drawing excessive attention.

A height of 40 mm is the minimum in the HI WOOD baseboard line and was specifically designed for modern interiors where visual lightness, spatial openness, and minimalist forms are valued. This height is optimal for rooms with low ceilings (2.4–2.5 meters), where standard baseboards of 60–80 mm height could visually reduce the space. The compact profile is ideal for minimalist, Scandinavian, loft, high-tech, Japanese minimalist, and modern interpretations of classic styles, where every element must be maximally restrained.

A thickness of 10 mm makes the W40V1 baseboard ultrathin and virtually invisible when viewed from the side. The profile barely protrudes from the wall, allowing furniture to be placed flush against it without gaps. This is especially relevant for built-in cabinets, kitchen sets, shelves, and other cabinetry. The standard length of 2000 mm allows effectively covering the perimeter of a standard room with minimal joints.

The production material — phytopolymer (high-density polystyrene) with a density of 680 kg/m³ — ensures a unique combination of properties. The product has a minimal weight of only 90 grams per linear meter, which is 5–6 times less than similar baseboards made of MDF or solid wood. Absolute water resistance of 100% makespolystyrene floor baseboarduniversal for any room. Matte white surface suitable for painting allows implementing any color solutions.

Phytopolymer of the new generation

The baseboard W40V1 is made of phytopolymer — high-density polystyrene of the latest generation, produced by HI WOOD using advanced South Korean technology with 30 years of experience. This thermoplastic polymer is created by precision extrusion of molten polystyrene through a special die head, followed by molding under controlled pressure of 25–30 MPa in vacuum chambers. The technological process forms an absolutely dense, homogeneous structure without any voids, cavities, pores, microcracks, or inclusions.

The material density of 680 kg/m³ — a key quality indicator — ensures maximum mechanical strength at minimal weight. This value is 30–40 times higher than the density of ordinary expanded polystyrene (15–25 kg/m³). Such density provides a bending strength of 45–50 MPa and an impact resistance of 10–12 kJ/m², comparable to the characteristics of certain wood species. At the same time, one linear meter of baseboard weighs only about 90 grams — the lightest baseboard in its class.

The phytopolymer’s water resistance reaches absolute 100% — the material does not absorb water even with prolonged immersion. Water absorption over 24 hours is less than 0.1% by mass. This means thatPolystyrene floor baseboardit can be installed confidently in the most humid rooms — bathrooms, showers, toilets, kitchens, laundries, pools, saunas, and steam rooms. The material does not swell, deform, rot, or develop mold or fungi.

Temperature stability covers a range from -50°C to +80°C. The baseboard does not deform when heated by underfloor heating systems with surface temperatures up to 30°C, radiators, convector heaters, or summer heat up to +40°C. When cooled, the material retains elasticity even at -30°C. The linear thermal expansion coefficient is only 0.06 mm per meter for a 10°C temperature change — the lowest value among finishing materials.

Ecological safety is confirmed by the prestigious "Korea Eco-Label" certificate. The material contains no formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, asbestos, or toxic substances. It does not emit volatile organic compounds even when heated to 70°C. The phytopolymer is chemically inert, odorless, hypoallergenic, and absolutely safe for health. The product is approved for use in kindergartens, schools, medical facilities, children’s rooms, and bedrooms.

Geometry of the minimalist profile

Dimensions of 40 × 10 mm represent the minimum values in the baseboard line and were specifically designed for modern minimalist interiors. A height of 40 mm creates a barely noticeable visual element that performs its functions without drawing attention. This height is optimal for rooms with low ceilings (2.4–2.5 meters), where it is important not to visually reduce the space. The compact profile effectively conceals the 8–10 mm technological gap between the floor covering and the wall, necessary to compensate for thermal expansion of laminate and parquet boards.

A thickness of 10 mm makes the W40V1 baseboard the thinnest in the HI WOOD line. This minimalist thickness creates a maximally delicate, virtually invisible transition from wall to floor. The baseboard does not protrude from the wall, does not create obstacles for furniture placement, and visually does not reduce the room’s area. At the same time, a thickness of 10 mm provides sufficient mounting surface for secure attachmentadhesive for polystyrene baseboards.

The profiled cross-section is designed in a minimalist form with a smooth front surface without decorative elements. The upper part has a minimal rounding with a radius of 1.5 mm for a soft transition to the wall. The lower part fits tightly to the floor, effectively covering the joint. The construction includes a small internal cavity 6 mm wide for accommodating thin wires of low-voltage systems.

Standard length of 2000 mm is optimal for transportation in a car and carrying by one person. Whentwo strips with one joint cover a 4-meter section, which corresponds to the typical dimensions of spacious rooms in luxury apartments and premium-class private homes.two boards cover a 4-meter length. The low weight of 90 grams per meter makes installation extremely simple.

Areas of application for the compact baseboard

The compact baseboard W40V1 is suitable for a wide variety of interior solutions. In minimalist interiors, where every element must be maximally restrained, the low profile of 40 mm creates a barely noticeable transition from wall to floor. It does not draw attention, does not fragment space, and allows walls to visually extend to the floor. This is especially relevant for interiors with bright accent walls, photo wallpapers, decorative plaster, or murals, where the baseboard should not distract from the main decor.

In Scandinavian interiors, the compactPolystyrene baseboardbaseboard with a height of 40 mm perfectly aligns with the philosophy of functionality and restraint. Painted white, it blends with light walls and creates a sense of airiness and spaciousness. The minimal thickness of 10 mm does not create visual barriers and allows furniture to be placed flush against walls without gaps.

In loft-style interiors with brick or concrete walls, the compact baseboard creates an unobtrusive technical frame without disrupting the industrial aesthetic. Painted in dark gray or black, it emphasizes the roughness of the finish. The low profile does not compete with the expressive texture of the walls and allows it to remain the main decorative element.

In Japanese minimalist interiors, the low baseboard W40V1 corresponds to the principle of "ma" — emptiness as a significant compositional element. The minimal height of 40 mm creates a barely noticeable boundary between planes without disrupting the overall minimalism. Painted in the color of the walls or natural materials, the baseboard becomes virtually invisible.

In modern high-tech interiors with glossy surfaces, metal, and glass, the compactpolystyrene floor baseboard40 mm high, creates a technological minimalist accent. Painted in silver, graphite, or snowy white, it emphasizes the clarity of lines and geometry of the space.

In rooms with low ceilings of 2.4–2.5 meters, a low skirting board visually does not reduce the perceived height of the room. Standard skirting boards of 70–80 mm in such spaces create a feeling of being low to the ground, whereas a compact 40 mm profile allows walls to appear to rise as high as possible from the floor. Painted to match the wall color, it creates an effect of continuous verticality.

In built-in rooms and niches where built-in cabinets, wardrobes, and storage units are used, a compact skirting board of 40 mm height does not create obstacles for installing furniture. Standard skirting boards require trimming of furniture bases, whereas a low profile allows furniture to stand naturally.

In children's rooms, a compact skirting board is safe due to its rounded shape and minimal protrusion from the wall. Children do not trip over the low profile while running or playing. The material's moisture resistance allows wiping the skirting board with a damp cloth during cleaning without risk of damage.

In commercial spaces — offices, shops, showrooms — a compact skirting board creates a professional minimalist look. It does not distract attention from products and displays. The strength of the polyfoam ensures resistance to mechanical impacts during intensive use.

Professional installation technology

Preparation for installation begins with acclimating the material in the room for 24–48 hours. Planks remain in factory packaging in a horizontal position at room temperature. The wall surface must be flat, with deviations no more than 2 mm per meter, clean, dry, and degreased. For a compact skirting board of 40 mm height, the flatness of the lower part of the wall is especially important, as any irregularities will be noticeable.

Marking is performed taking into account the placement of joints in the least noticeable locations — in corners, behind doors, behind furniture. Forpolystyrene floor skirting boardIt is recommended to avoid short cuts less than 20 cm, which are difficult to install properly.

For mounting, specializedadhesives for polystyrene skirting boardsWater-based adhesive: acrylic adhesives such as liquid nails, MS-polymer adhesives, and the brand-specific adhesive HI WOOD HD1000. Adhesives with organic solvents are strictly prohibited — they destroy polystyrene.

Adhesive is applied to the back of the skirting board in a dotted line with an interval of 8–10 cm. For a compact profile, it is sufficient to apply adhesive in a 2–3 mm thick strip. The skirting board is pressed against the wall and held for 10–15 seconds. Due to its minimal weight of 90 grams, the adhesive sets instantly. Excess adhesive is removed with a damp sponge.

Cutting and preparation of elements

For cutting a compact skirting board of 40 mm height, all standard tools are suitable. The questionhow to cut polystyrene skirting boardhas a simple answer — a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade provides the most accurate result. For home use, a metal hacksaw with a hand saw is suitable.

Many are interestedhow to cut polystyrene baseboarddoes not require special tools. A sharp construction knife with replaceable blades is suitable for straight cuts. The cut is performed in several passes with gradual deepening. After cutting, the end is processed with fine-grit sandpaper.

Corner finishing

To create corners, the ends are cut at 45 degrees. Plank joints are assembled using a pre-fit method without adhesive. For a compactpolystyrene floor skirting boardof 40 mm height, precision cutting is especially important — any gaps will be very noticeable on a small profile.

Joint filling is performed with acrylic sealant. The sealant is applied using a caulking gun, excess is removed with a rubber spatula. The joint is smoothed and, after drying, becomes invisible.

Painting the baseboard

Questionhow to paint a polystyrene skirting boardhas a definite answer — only water-based paints. Acrylic, latex, and silicone paints are ideal. Paints with solvents are strictly prohibited — they destroy polystyrene.

Application is performed with a brush or roller. For a compact profile of 40 mm height, two thin coats of paint are sufficient. The first coat is applied evenly, the second coat provides the final finish.

Color Solutions

Classic white coloring remains a popular choice. A white skirting board visually blends with light walls and creates an effect of continuity. Coloring to match the wall color makes the skirting board practically invisible — ideal for minimalist interiors.

Contrasting coloring in dark tones creates a clear graphic line at the floor. A black, dark gray, or anthracite skirting board on light walls emphasizes the geometry of the space. Coloring to match the floor creates a visual continuation of the floor covering onto the wall.

Care and Maintenance

Correctly installedPolystyrene floor baseboardRequires virtually no maintenance. It is sufficient to periodically wipe with a damp cloth. Polystyrene is resistant to most household cleaning agents based on water. The product’s lifespan is 15–20 years.
