Wooden Balusters

A baluster is a small carved post intended to support balcony and staircase railings. In addition to its primary function, balusters are also a very beautiful decorative element.

Due to the increasing number of people returning to natural materials, wooden balusters have once again become in high demand. Carved wooden balusters give staircases or balconies an unusual, mysterious look.

Wooden balusters are made from almost any type of wood, but most often use beech, pine, birch, and oak. It should be remembered that wooden items require maintenance.

What shapes wooden balusters come in?

When manufacturing wooden balusters, three types are distinguished

• Classic (cylindrical). These are the simplest-looking posts, usually with symmetrical carving.
• Thin and straight. These balusters have the shape of an ellipse or a quadrilateral.
• Figurative. These are very beautiful carved decorative elements made from more expensive types of wood. Such balusters are usually manufactured on CNC lathes.

Classification of balusters by grades

There are three grades:

• The highest grade - Grade A. These balusters have uniform texture and color. They are usually simply coated with a transparent lacquer with slight tinting. Small defects are allowed, but not more than 5 mm in diameter.
• Grade B. In products of this grade, partial selection is made by texture and color. Balusters of this grade are coated with a darker lacquer. Color variations and quite significant textural differences are allowed, as well as quite large knots and closed cracks.
• The cheapest grade C. In this grade, there is practically no selection by pattern and color. In the same batch, you may encounter balusters with knots of different colors (from dark to light), but even in this grade, the size of defects should not be large. In grade C, filling of cracks and knots is allowed during the initial manufacturing stage.
