Polystyrene Crown Mouldings HI WOOD — Elegant Ceiling Finish from STAVROS

Polystyrene crown mouldings (ceiling skirting, coving) — a modern decorative solution for wall-ceiling junctions, giving interiors a finished, elegant look. STAVROS, an official partner of the South Korean manufacturer HI WOOD, offers a wide range of decorative polystyrene crown mouldings with high density (680 kg/m³), combining exceptional strength, absolute water resistance, minimal weight, and affordable cost. HI WOOD’s polystyrene ceiling crown mouldings are the optimal solution for interiors of any style, from classic to modern minimalism.

Advantages of Polystyrene Crown Mouldings

Minimal weight and ease of installation — polystyrene crown mouldings are 5–7 times lighter than gypsum, wood, or polyurethane equivalents, significantly simplifying installation and allowing one person to install them without special tools. The items are attached using a water-based adhesive without mechanical fastening.

100% absolute water resistance — the material does not absorb water even when fully submerged, allowing installation of polystyrene ceiling crown mouldings in bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, pools, and other wet areas without risk of deformation, swelling, or mold growth. Water absorption is less than 0.1% by mass.

Geometric stability — the coefficient of thermal expansion of the phytopolymer is only 0.06–0.08 mm per meter for a 10°C temperature change, practically eliminating gaps at joints during seasonal temperature fluctuations. Unlike polyurethane, the material does not shrink after installation.

High strength — the material’s density of 680 kg/m³ provides a bending strength of 45–50 MPa, comparable to hardwoods. Decorative polystyrene crown mouldings are resistant to mechanical damage, do not crack, and retain their relief detail for decades.

Ecological safety — the "Korea Eco-Label" class A+ certification confirms the absence of formaldehyde, phenol, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds. The material is absolutely safe for the health of all family members.

Universal painting — the white matte surface is ready for painting, allowing professional water-based paints to be used to color the crown mouldings in any shade, creating an ideal match with interior design.

Affordable price — the cost of polystyrene crown mouldings is 2–3 times lower than similar polyurethane, gypsum, or wooden products, while maintaining comparable or superior quality.

Material Technical Specifications

Phytopolymer (dureopolymer) — high-density polystyrene (680 kg/m³), produced using a patented South Korean technology via high-precision extrusion at 200–220°C, followed by molding under 25–30 MPa pressure. The technology ensures perfect relief detail, geometric accuracy, and absolute uniformity of all profiles in a batch.

The material’s temperature stability covers a range from -50°C to +80°C without changes in physical or mechanical properties. Polystyrene ceiling crown mouldings do not deform from summer heat, heating, or frost, maintaining ideal geometry throughout their service life.

Chemical resistance ensures resistance to most household substances — water, soap solutions, water-based cleaning agents, and alcohol. It is critically important to remember that polystyrene is incompatible with organic solvents — acetone, white spirit, gasoline.

Wide range of designs

Smooth crown mouldings

Crown mouldings with smooth, minimalist surfaces without decorative relief are ideal for modern minimalist, loft, high-tech, and Scandinavian interiors. Clean lines emphasize the geometry of space and create a sense of order.

Crown mouldings with classic relief

Profiles with delicate decorative relief — horizontal grooves, coves, ornaments — are ideal for classic, neoclassical interiors, Provence, and country styles. The relief creates a play of light and shadow, giving the ceiling a sense of depth.

Wide crown mouldings

Profiles with increased width (100–200 mm) create a striking frame in rooms with ceilings over 3 meters. Wide decorative polystyrene crown mouldings visually reduce ceiling height, making the space more cozy.

Crown mouldings for concealed lighting

Special profiles with a technical recess for mounting LED strips allow creating an eye-catching floating ceiling lighting effect. Light reflects off the ceiling and creates soft, diffused lighting along the room’s perimeter.

Areas of application

Residential spaces — apartments, country houses, cottages, townhouses. Polystyrene crown mouldings create elegant framing for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, offices, and children’s rooms of any size.

Wet zones — bathrooms, toilets, showers, pools, saunas. The material’s absolute water resistance ensures longevity in humid environments.

Commercial interiors — offices, banks, restaurants, cafes, hotels, shopping centers. The material’s strength ensures durability under intensive use.

Public spaces — museums, theaters, galleries, concert halls. Crown mouldings create a grand atmosphere and highlight the architectural significance of the space.

Installation of decorative polystyrene crown mouldings

Installation of decorative polystyrene crown mouldings is performed using a high-strength water-based adhesive without mechanical fastening. Recommended professional acrylic adhesives such as liquid nails, MS-polymer adhesives, or the HI WOOD HD1000 adhesive.

Surface preparation

The ceiling and wall surfaces must be flat with a deviation of no more than 2–3 mm per meter, clean without dust or dirt, dry with humidity not exceeding 10%, and degreased. To improve adhesion, it is recommended to prime the surface with a deep-penetration primer.

Installation process

Adhesive is applied to both mounting surfaces of the polystyrene crown moulding — to the wall and ceiling — in a continuous line or dots spaced 10 cm apart. The crown moulding is pressed against the wall-ceiling junction and firmly pressed for 30 seconds. Temporary fixation with painter’s tape for 2–3 hours until the adhesive sets is recommended.

Corner finishing

Room corners are finished by trimming the ends of the profiles at a precise 45-degree angle using a circular saw or a miter box. The joint is filled with white acrylic sealant and carefully smoothed to create a seamless, invisible transition. For complex profiles with relief, ready-made corner elements are recommended.

Cutting and processing

The material is easily processed with a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade or a standard metal hacksaw. For clean cuts without chipping, it is recommended to use blades with 80–100 teeth.

Crown moulding painting

The white matte surface of polystyrene crown mouldings has a specially prepared structure for painting with professional water-based paints without prior priming. Interior acrylic, latex, or silicone paints are used.

It is strictly prohibited to use paints based on organic solvents — alkyd enamels, oil paints, nitro lacquers. Solvents destroy the polystyrene structure.

Application is performed with a synthetic-bristle brush for profiles with relief or a roller for smooth surfaces in 2–3 layers. The first layer is applied thinly and evenly; after 3–4 hours of drying, the final layer is applied.

Classic white painting maximally highlights the decorative relief through the play of light and shadow. Painting in ceiling color visually increases room height. Contrasting painting creates an accent frame.

Installation of concealed lighting

Special polystyrene ceiling crown moulding models with a technical recess allow creating an eye-catching floating ceiling lighting effect. The LED strip is mounted in the recess after installing the crown moulding and connected to a 12V or 24V power supply.

It is recommended to use LED strips with power 8–14 W per meter and high color rendering index CRI over 90. The color of illumination is selected depending on the purpose — warm white 2700–3000K for cozy atmosphere, neutral white 4000K for functional lighting, RGB for color effects.

Care and Maintenance

Properly installed decorative polystyrene crown mouldings practically require no special maintenance. It is sufficient to wipe them periodically with a dry or damp cloth during general cleaning. For cleaning the relief, a soft brush or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment is convenient.

Service life is 15–20 years and more, provided the rules of use are followed. The material does not age, yellow, or fade in sunlight and retains relief detail for decades.
